Originally from Cwmbran, South Wales, Rhianwen has been playing since she was 7, and at just 9 years old joined a local town band. She played for a number of Welsh bands including the Gwent music centre and the National youth band of Wales in 2012 & 2013. Gwent gave her an array of playing and performance opportunities, on a number of occasions playing at the Royal Albert Hall!
Leaving Wales in 2012, she ventured to Yorkshire and to Huddersfiled University where she studied music under Phillip McCann.
Her Yorkshire banding career begun and she played for a number of bands including Driglington, Hebden Bridge then Hepworth before moving to Doncaster in 2015, where she played for Ireland Colliery, Unite the Union, then Thoresby Colliery band. In 2022 a career change meant she could no longer continue at Thoresby and so she took a short break from banding.
Later she began helping out Thurcroft Welfare band where her husband, Matt Wright, was Musical Director. She played with the band at this years Regional and National Finals before joining #TeamChapeltown!
“Very excited to play and work with the band, it’s so friendly and welcoming. The band have a busy period ahead and Iām looking forward to getting stuck in!”
Rhianwen Wright
We have seen her great commitment to banding and her playing ability, as she’s helped the band at a number of concerts recently and the Bolsover Festival of Brass. The committee are really pleased to bolster the section with Rhianwen and look forward to this Friday’s concert, the festive season and beyond, with her in the band.
